ABSTRACT A mechanical central buffer coupler for vehicles particularly rail vehicles including an associated communication, for instance electric, cable coupling for closing with a cooperating electric cable coupling on a cooperating coupler and wherein the couplings include centring pins and coacting engaging sockets for alignment and guiding of the cable couplings. Each coupling includes a support, a recess defined in the support, an elastic lining in each recess and a respective optic conductor inset received in each elastic lining. One of the insets has a protruding end face with the other having a cooperating relieved end face and each end face receives an optic conductor means, one at least of which is resiliently mounted for axial movement when engaging the other optic conductor. There is a cover on at least one of the insets for protecting its respective optic conductor and which is displaced by a plunger on the other of the insets when the couplings are closed. Both insets may carry covers, with plunger means for displacing the other's cover upon closing of the couplings.
