ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical connector for releasably fastening a blade to the handle of a hockey stick. The mechanical connector comprises a spring-loaded locking pin mounted to a projecting tongue of the blade which slidingly engages a closely conforming recess at the lower end of the handle. In the extended position, the locking pin penetrates within a locking aperture on the handle to prevent unwanted separation of the blade. A resilient packing element, such as a band of elastomeric material, is compressed between telescoped portions of the blade and the handle to take-up the free-play therebetween. The mechanical connector can also be used for attaching a grip member to the upper end of the handle to form a handle extension.
