Instruments of the invention are intended primarily for measuring large size mechanical workpieces (30cm to 150 cm and more), such as rolling mill rolls. Each comprises a thin flat body of C-shape in side elevation with a distance measuring transducer at one end and an anvil member at the other. The transducer employs a spring-urged plunger and is connected electrically to a read-out instrument package disposed to be viewed conveniently by an operator while manipulating the instrument and providing a visual readout, plus storage if required. The anvil member operative surface is perpendicular to the measurement axis and provides at least a line of contact with the workpiece surface. The anvil surface extends along the contact line area sufficiently to provide transverse stability during movement of the instrument in its plane while measuring. The instrument usually is used with its weight supported by the workpiece, and provides accurate measurements, eliminating errors due to operator "gauge feel" and reducing the requirements for operator skill and training. The instrument body may be made employing a composite material of high modulus fibrous material (e.g. carbon fibre) embedded in a matrix of plastics material (e.g. epoxy resin).
