ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The specification describes a mechanical prosthesis of the knee having a thigh member and a leg member which can be brakingly locked in position when the members are subjected to opposed forces. The artificial knee includes pivot means providing relative pivotal movement between the members and locking means responsive to the opposed forces to lock the members in position. The pivot and locking means include a drum fixed to one member and a resilient band encircling the drum actuated by a lever connected to the other member. The lever is operable to clamp the band upon the drum to thereby brakingly lock the members in position.
