A mechanical seal used to provide a fluid seal between a rotary member such as a drive shaft and a stationary member through which the rotary member passes. The mechanical seal has a rotary portion adapted to be mounted on the rotary member for rotation therewith, and a stationary portion adapted to be mounted on the stationary member. The stationary portion includes a stationary sealing ring having a sealing face. The rotary portion includes a housing having a circular recess therein concentric with the axis of rotation of the rotary member. A rotary sealing ring is located in the circular recess and is supported elastically therein and fixed against rotation relative to the housing. The rotary sealing ring has a sealing face which sealingly contacts the sealing face of the stationary sealing ring. The rotary sealing ring is preferably supported in the circular recess by means of an elastic mount. A combination of a rotary sealing ring and an elastic mount therefor is also described and claimed.
