ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical seal having a floating seal which comprises an integrally formed slide ring and retainer, the slide ring, which is provided with a sliding surface, being insert-molded into one end of the retainer at the time of mold- ing of the latter. There is also disclosed a method of making such a floating seal. The mechanical seal has a highly airtight sliding surface.
