ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A mechanical seal assembly for sealing a rotary shaft to a housing and having a rotary sealing ring and a non- rotatable sealing ring which defines a cavity with the housing, the assembly including means to provide improved fluid cooling of the face of the non-rotatable sealing ring and a self- compensating sealing face that increases the fluid leak rate through the seal as a function of heat at the sealing faces. First fluid passages extend through the non-rotatable ring to establish communication between the housing and the cavity, and second fluid passages extend through the non-rotatable ring and also establish communication between the cavity and the housing. The second fluid passages open to the rotary sealing ring at a location contiguous to the sealing surfaces between the rings.
