A mechanical switching apparatus has a housing (1) which contains a ball (5) supported in a retainer (4). A control lever (2) projects radially from the input side of the ball (5) and is rigidly fixed so that, together with the ball (5), two rotational movements can be made along axes (19, 24) which are perpendicular to each other and pass through he mid-point (6) of the ball (5). On the output side, two separate transmission elements (13, 23) are provided which consist of pins and whose axes (14, 24) lie parallel to each other. The two transmission elements (13, 23) are each coupled to the ball (5) via a free-wheel mechanism, whereby the two free- wheel mechanisms are so formed and arranged in relation to each other that the first free-wheel mechanism engages for the first transmission element (13) when the control lever (2) is moved through its first rotational movement, and the other free-wheel mechanism is then free-wheeling for the other transmission element (23), whereas when the control lever (2) is moved through its second rotational movement the situation is reversed.
