ABSTRACT An ink-transfer thermal serial dot printer has a mechanism switch- ing from a head-down state of the thermal head to a head-up state. The printer has a winding up mechanism for a take-up reel for an ink-transfer ribbon, the operation of which is performed or not performed in connection with the switching of the head-down or head-up state of the thermal head, causing the feeding of the ink-transfer ribbon during the spacing operation (in head- up state) of the printer to stop to save the ink-transfer ribbon. The switching mechanism involves a cam and cam follower giving rise to a virtually noiseless cam action. Also the inertia of the moving portion associated with the switching operation is minimized to increase the switching speed.
