Disclosed herein is the use of a variety of diazacyanines as mediators for the electrochemical oxidation of NADH/NADPH to NAD+/NADP+, which are reduced by an oxireductase, also present in the system. By applying the mediator together with NADH/NADPH to the surface of a working electrode, the voltage necessary to achieve the desired oxidation is substantially reduced.
