ABSTRACT Apparatus for treating the eye with a laser beam to effect ophthalmological surgery said eye placed in proximity to a contact body ,said apparatus comprising a device for observing and treating the eye which comprises an optical system, means for employing said optical system to illuminate the area of the eye to be treated and means for employing said optical system to treat said eye with said laser beam, means to produce a beam of coherent light to pass through said optical system for setting the focus of a first focusing lens to direct the subsequent treatment laser beam to the area of the eye to be treated, and means to adjust said optical system to eliminate unwanted optical effects prior to energizing said laser beam for surgically treating the eye, whereby a single optical system is employed for both observing and treating the eye.
