Reduced trauma medical implants (10), and methods for their use are disclosed wherein at least a portion of the implant is formed of a stretch crystallizable elastomeric material formulated to exhibit the property of stretch crystallization upon substantial elongation of the implant to form stable, small incision implant configurations having at least one dimension substantially reduced for insertion through a surgical incision that is small relative to the incision size necessary to implant the un-stretched implant. Exemplary embodiments include intraocular implants formed of optically clear, high refractive index stretch crystallizable silicone elastomers formulated to stretch crystalize at near ambient temperatures upon elongations greater than or equal to 300 %, and to recover their original configuration immediately upon exposure to body temperature following implantation.
L'invention concerne des prothèses médicales (10) à effets traumatisants réduits (10) et des procédés relatifs à leur utilisation. Au moins une partie de la prothèse est en matériau élastomère à cristallisation induite par étirement, matériau conçu pour offrir ladite cristallisation en cas d'allongement sensible de la prothèse, ce qui donne des configurations de prothèse stables nécessitant une incision réduite et présentant au moins une taille d'incision unidimensionnelle aux fins d'implantation sous une forme non étirée. A titre d'exemple, on cite les lentilles intraoculaires en élastomères de silicone, à cristallisation induite par étirement, optiquement clairs, à fort indice de réfraction. Lesdites lentilles sont conçues pour présenter une cristallisation par étirement à des températures proches de la température ambiante après un allongement supérieur ou égal à 300 %, d'une part, et pour reprendre leur configuration initiale dès qu'elles sont exposées à la température corporelle après implantation.
