ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A hydrophilic sponge is adapted for medical use by embossing a texturized polyurethane foam with various fused designs. A method for the production of the hydrophilic sponge is disclosed. This method comprises embossing, with a fused design, a flat polyurethane foam sheet to about 25% to 95% of its original thickness. The design is composed of a series of continuous lines no more than about 1 inch apart, with each line terminating at an edge of the sheet. A package contain- ing the hydrophilic sponge is also disclosed.
