The invention provides a medical tool which comprises a water-swellable polymer which is a block or graft co- polymer which comprises a moiety which manifests lubricity and another moiety which has a reactive functional group selected from an epoxy group, an acid halide group and an isocyanate group in the molecular unit. A matrix material is chemically bonded to the water-swellable polymer by means of a proton-donating group in the matix material which is capable of reacting with the functional group. In preferred embodiments, the proton donating group is selected from an amino group, an imino group, a hydroxy group, a carboxyl group and a mercapto group. The invention provides a medical tool which exhibits continuous lubricity when in a wetted state.
