Abstract A novel method of processing and storing human blood platelets is disclosed which comprises the replacement of about 35-45 mls of plasma per unit of blood platelets with a synthetic storage medium. This synthetic storage medium comprises a buffered Ringers-citrate solution which prefer- ably contains a platelet permeable substrate for oxidative phosporylation. In the resultant platelet suspension, the amount of glucose available for glycolysis is preferably limited to less than about 10 mM, preferably less than about 5.0 mM. This platelet suspension is stored in an oxygen permeable container at about 20°-24°C until needed for use. Using this method and medium platelets will maintain their viability for up to as long as about 7 days. Another form of the invention involves obtaining a platelet pellet and resuspending the pellet in a medium consisting of a balanced physiologically compatible saline solution, an anticoagulant, and additives selected from nutrients, and buffering agents. -1-
