ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention relates to compositions of a new selective medium, designated MBL for the rapid enumeration of lactobacilli species within 24-48 hours. This medium is effective in recovering lactobacilli from the studies of pure cultures and from a variety of foods. Compared with the other selective media available in the market, it is far superior in growing lactobacilli while inhibiting the growth of StrepLococci and Entero- bacteriaceae/Aeromonas species. The superior growth of L. acidophilus (oral), L. salivarius (oral), L. fructovorans (vegetables), L. viridescans (meats), L. bulgaricus (dairy), L. casei (dairy) and L. delbrueckii (dairy) compared with the other selective media particularly suggested a possible universal medium for the selective cultivation of all lactobacilli. The capacity of this medium for good growth of lactobacilli species and for the selective inhibition of non-lactics, is due to the incorporation of various growth factors and specific antibacterial agents or the selective agents.
