PHQ 77-003 ABSTRACT A magnetic layer for storing information in the form of place-dependent geometrical patterns of magnetic domains, which layer can be magnetised in two different dir- ections, the walls of the domains being fixed by local grad- ients in the magnetic properties of the magnetic layer. The local gradients are variations in the value or direction of the magnetic anisotropy or of the magnetic exchange energy. The value of the magnetisation remains substantially the same. These variations are caused in a considerable part of the thickness of the magnetic layer by irradiation of the layer with accelerated ions.
