The invention relates to membranes and to a method for the separation of aromatic hydrocarbons from a mixture of various aromatic hydrocarbons or from a mixture of such aro- matic hydrocarbons and non-aromatic hydrocarbons. According to the invention the membrane is formed from aromatic poly- esters on the basis of aromatic diacid chlorides in combina- tion with either bisphenol-A-like bisphenols, or a bisphenol which is completely built up of aromatic centres. Preferably the membrane is formed from aromatic polyesters on the basis of aromatic diacid chlorides such as terephthaloyl chloride, isophthaloyl chloride, 5-t-butyliso- phthaloyl chloride, or PIDA in combination with bisphenol-A- like bisphenols, such as 4X-BPN, 4X-BPT, 4X-BPI.
