ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A flat permeable membrane is disclosed consisting of polyolefin 10 to 500 um in thickness, which membrane has compact layers of intimately bound fine particles of polyolefin formed one each in the opposite surface regions of the membrane and a layer of an aggregate of fine discreet particles of an average of 0.01 to 5 um formed between the compact layers and, consequently, has fine through pores labyrinthically extended in the direction of thickness of the membrane to establish communication between the opposite surfaces of the membrane. Also disclosed is a method of manufacturing the flat permeable membrane comprising mixing a polyolefin, a crystal seed forming agent, and an organic filler. The organic filler is characterised in that it is uniformly dispersible in the polyolefin in a molten state and is easily soluble in an extractant in which the polyolefin is not soluble. The mixture is discharged through a die then cooled and solidified by contact with a cooling fluid. The membrane formed thereby is then treated with the extractant to remove the organic filler.
