ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides novel menthyl pyran compounds which, while possessing little or no odor or flavor themselves, release menthol upon hydrolysis and/or pyrolysis. These compounds may be used to flavor a variety of consumer products such as tobacco products, non-tobacco smoking substitutes, gums, medicinal products, and food- stuffs. The invention also provides a novel process for the preparation of these compounds. The compounds have the formula: Image I wherein R is hydrogen or lower acyl of 1-3 carbons; R' is hydrogen, a hydroxyl group or an acyloxy group of 1 to 3 carbons, and the dotted line represents an optional double bond.
