Disclosed is a method of reducing an immune response to a transplant in a recipient by treating said recipient with an amount of mesenchymal stem cells effective to reduce or inhibit host rejection of the transplant. The mesenchymal stem cells can be administered before, at the same time as, or after the transplant. Also disclosed is a method of inducing a reduced immune response against a host by foreign tissue, i.e., graft versus host disease, by treatment with mesenchymal stem cells.

L'invention concerne un procédé qui permet de réduire la réponse immunitaire du receveur à un transplant et qui consiste à traiter le receveur avec une certaine quantité de cellules de souche mésenchymateuse, efficace pour réduire ou pour inhiber le rejet du transplant par l'hôte. On peut administrer les cellules de souche mésenchymateuse avant, pendant ou après la transplantation. L'invention concerne également un procédé pour induire une réponse immunitaire limitée contre un hôte par un tissu étranger, par exemple, par la greffe vis-à-vis d'une maladie de l'hôte, au moyen du traitement avec des cellules de souche mésenchymateuse.
