A mesomorphic compound represented by the following formula (I): R1-A1-B1-A2-R2 (I), wherein R1 and R2 respectively denote a linear or branched alkyl group having 3 - 18 carbon atoms capable of including one or non-neighboring two or more methylene groups which can be replaced with at least one species of -Z-, Image , Image , Image , Image , Image , Image , -CH=CH- and -CC-, wherein Z denotes -O- or -S- and R3 denotes hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 - 5 carbon atoms; B1 denotes Image or Image ; A1 denotes a single bond, Image or Image ; A2 denotes a single bond, -A3- or -A3-A4- wherein A3 and A4 respectively denote any one of A1, Image , Image , Image , Image , Image , Image , Image and Image ; and Y1 and Y2 respectively denote any one of hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, -CH3, -CN and -CF3. Liquid crystal compositions containing the compound of formula (I) exhibit improved responsiveness to an electric field and are particularly suited for use in a number of liquid crystal devices such as display apparatus, crystal-optical shutters, etc.
