Microprocessor-controlled message devices with provision for recording, digitally storing, and playing back a voice message. Playback of the message is initiated by a motion responsive inertial switch with a hairpin actuator or by a user-accessible preview switch. Recording is initiated by a press-to- record switch which will allow recording to proceed only for so long as the switch is maintained in a closed state by the user. Playback is precluded while a message is being recorded. An on-off switch is provided to disenable the inertial switch, and an optional delay feature keeps the inertial switch from initiating message playback for a designated period after the on-off switch is closed. Another option allows a user to adjust the sensitivity of the device to motion. Yet another control inactivates the recording circuitry, which keeps a stored message from being accidentally or purposely recorded over or erased and thereby results in the same recorded message being played back each time playback is initiated.
