MESSAGE PROTOCOL MODULE Abstract of the Disclosure A peripheral adapter interfaces at least one peripheral in a data processing system to an I/O pro- cessor which controls the method of communication. The peripheral adapter comprises a first means which per- forms a serial-parallel, parallel-serial transformation on the information from or to the I/O processor, a second means which provides peripheral controller logic functions, and a third means which generates re- sponse transmissions to the I/O processor in accordance with a defined message protocol. The method of com- munication is defined such that the peripheral adapter is essentially slave to the I/O processor, responding to messages initiated by the I/O processor.
