The present invention is directed generally to telephony networks and specifically to presence-aware telephony networks. One aspect of the invention provides a method for handling a contact directed to a subscriber, comprising: conducting a messaging session with a subscriber's communication device in which previously received messages are provided to the subscriber's communication device; during the messaging session, receiving a new contact intended for the subscriber's communication device; notifying the subscriber of the new contact; when the subscriber accepts the contact, suspending the messaging session; and connecting a contactor, associated with the new contact, with the subscriber.
