RD-10930 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Meta, para-substituted isopropylidene bisphenols are provided and methods for making such materials. Phenol, or substituted phenol is condensed with a meta-substituted isopropenyl phenol or a meta-hydroxy- .alpha., .alpha.-dimethylbenzyl alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst. The re- sulting meta, parasubstituted isopropylidene bisphenols can be used as stabilizers for polyvinyl chloride resins and as intermediates for making high performance ther- moplastics having chemically combined meta, para-isopro- pylidene diphenoxy units.
