ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Smoke-retardant polymer compositions prepared by admixing a resin consisting of a polyvinyl halide or a polystyrene with a smoke reducing amount of a metal-2-marcaptobenzothiazole, a metal-2-mercaptobenzoxazole, or a metal- 2-mercaptobenzimidazole having the general formula Image where R ant R1 can be a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, slkylaryl or halogen, X is elther oxygen, sulfur or NR2, M is a metal, n is an integer equal to the valence of the metal and R2 can be a hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or alkylaryl group.
