The present invention is directed to a metal block suitable for machining, the metal block comprising at least two superimposed metal plates, each having a thickness of at least 12.5 mm, wherein the yield strength of the block is at least 75 % of the yield strength of the initial metal plate(s). The present invention is further directed to methods for manufacturing such blocks from two or more thick metal plates by explosive welding and other methods. Blocks according to the present invention are useful, for example, for manufacturing aircraft structural components or injection molds for plastics or rubber.

Bloc métallique adapté pour l'usinage, qui comporte au moins deux plaques métalliques superposées, chaque plaque ayant une épaisseur d'au moins 12,5 mm et la limite d'élasticité du bloc étant d'au moins 75% de la limite d'élasticité des plaques métalliques initiales. La présente invention concerne également des procédés de fabrication de blocs de ce type à partir de deux plaques métalliques épaisses ou plus par soudage par explosion ou d'autres procédés. Les blocs selon la présente invention sont utiles, par exemple, pour fabriquer des pièces structurales d'aéronefs ou des moules de moulage par injection pour du plastique ou du caoutchouc.
