A metal-coated multilayer mirror having high reflectivity and high specularity. The mirror comprises a multilayered polymer film (10) and a reflective metal layer. The multilayered polymer film preferably comprises layers of a crystalline, semi-crystalline or liquid crystalline material, such as a naphthalene dicarboxylic acid polyester (12), having an average thickness of not more than 0.5 microns and layers of a second polymer (14) having an average thickness of not more than 0.5 microns. Preferably, the layers of semi- crystalline naphthalene dicarboxylic acid polyester have a stress optical coefficient. The reflective metal layer comprises a metal selected from the group consisting of silver, gold, aluminium, nickel, copper, titanium, with silver and aluminium being particularly preferred. The metal-coated multilayer mirrors are useful in applications requiring broad bandwidth reflection, high specularity, low manufacturing costs, high reflectivity.
Ce miroir multicouche revêtu de métal présente un pouvoir réfléchissant et des caractéristiques spéculaires élevés. Il se compose d'un film polymère (10) multicouche et d'une couche métallique réfléchissante. Ce film polymère comprend des couches d'un matériau cristallin, semi-cristallin ou cristallin liquide tel qu'un polyester à base d'acide dicarboxylique de naphtalène (12), d'une épaisseur moyenne de 0,5 µm au plus, et il comprend des couches d'un deuxième polymère (14) d'une épaisseur moyenne de 0,5 µm au plus. Les couches de polyester d'acide dicarboxylique de naphtalène présentent de préférence un coefficient photo-élastique par traction. La couche de métal réflecteur comprend un métal sélectionné dans le groupe comprenant or, nickel, cuivre, titane, argent et aluminium, la préférence allant aux deux derniers. De tels miroirs multicouches revêtus de métal servent pour des utilisations où l'on exige une réflexion de large bande passante, des caractéristiques spéculaires et une réflectivité élevées, ainsi que de faibles coûts de fabrication.
