A metal cutting tool (10) having an indexable cutting insert (12) retained in an insert pocket (16) of an insert holder (14). The cutting insert has two opposing side surfaces (24) with a peripheral edge surface (26) extending therebetween and a plurality of cutting portions (32). The peripheral edge surface (26) has a plurality of abutment sections (28), each abutment section (28) lying on a portion of a sidewall of an imaginary regular polygon. A plurality of cutting portions (32) extend outwardly from the imaginary polygon and are equal in number to the number of side walls thereof. Each abutment section (28) is located between two cutting portions (32). The insert holder (14) has an insert pocket (16) in which the cutting insert (12) is retained with the peripheral edge surface (26) being abutted at two abutment sections (28) by two support walls (20) of the insert pocket (16), the support walls (20) being fixed and integral parts of the insert holder(14).
L'invention concerne un outil de coupe de m~taux (10) poss~dant un insert de coupe indexable (12) retenu dans une poche d'insert (16) d'un support d'insert (14). L'insert de coupe comporte deux surfaces lat~rales oppos~es (24) avec une surface lat~rale p~riph~rique (26) s'~tendant entre elles et plusieurs parties de coupe (32). La surface lat~rale p~riph~rique (26) consiste en plusieurs sections de but~e (28), chaque section de but~e (28) ~tant situ~e sur une partie de paroi lat~rale d'un polygone r~gulier imaginaire. Plusieurs parties de coupe (32) s'~tendent vers l'ext~rieur ~ partir du polygone imaginaire et sont ~gales en nombre par rapport au nombre de parois lat~rales de celles-ci. Chaque section de but~e (28) est situ~e entre deux parties de coupe (32). Le support d'insert (14) comprend une poche d'insert (16) dans laquelle l'insert de coupe (12) est retenu avec la surface lat~rale p~riph~rique (26) ~tant mise en but~e au niveau des sections de but~e (28) par deux parois support (20) de la poche d'insert (16), les parois support (20) ~tant fix~es et faisant partie int~grante du support d'insert (14).
