A metal staple is provided that features a shank portion (3) having a pointed end portion (10) and an opposite end that is integrally connected in substantial parallel alignment with a head portion (4). Head portion (4) is provided with at least one recess (12) facing towards shank portion (3) for enhancing its ability to secure backing such as wire mesh and the like to a metal frame (14) and the width ("W") and thickness ("T") of shank member (3) in the region between the pointed end portion (10) and head (4)denoted by the letters "Y"-"X" is effective to enable at least the pointed end portion (10) to penetrate through metal frame walls of prescribed thickness (G).
