METAL HALIDE ARC DISCHARGE LAMPS HAVING SHIELDED ELECTRODE Abstract A high intensity discharge lamp which includes electrodes has a shield disposed about an electrode. The shield is conical and is constructed of one mil thick tungsten and is positioned with respect to the electrode so that the shield is heated to incandescence during lamp operation. The heated shield increases the cold-spot temperature to raise lamp performance as well as protecting the end of the lamp from blackening caused by sputtered electrode materials.
