The invention relates to polymers comprising a plurality of linked porphyrin units having formula (1), (2) or (3) (see formula 1, 2, 3) and processes for making such polymers. The porphyrin-containing polymers of the invention can be used in dyes, catalysts, contrast agents, antitumor agents, antiviral agents, liquid crystals, chemical sensors and electrooptical and solar energy conversion devices. The polymers anchor porphyrin units in a relatively stable geometry.
