ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A metal metering pump system for sequentially dispensing precisely metered quantities of metal, such as zinc, aluminum or lead calots used in the manufacture of battery cases, incorporates a reciprocating shaft of selectively variable stroke, with a piston operating within a cylinder immersed in a reservoir of the molten metal. The piston has a slide valve mounted at one end, serving as a check valve pumping of the liquid metal. Variation in the length of the piston stroke controls the quantity of liquid metal that is metered at each stroke. Withdrawal of the piston induces flow of the molten metal into the pump. Advancement of the pump piston discharges the metered quantity to a non-return discharge valve. The discharge valve connects the interior of the pump through the bottom of the tank to a conveyor located therebeneath, onto which the metered quantity of liquid metal is discharged. The discharge valve is pressure sensitive to open, and pressure head and gravity biased to close.
