On introduit un métal ou un alliage de celui-ci, ou un produit céramique qui possède une phase liquide, sous forme solide (tige ou filament), liquide au point d'intersection formé par plusieurs jets convergents de torche àplasma. Il y a alors atomisation et suite à un refroidissement contrôlé, on obtient des poudres sphéroïdales dont les dimensions varient en général entre environ 10 et 300 µm.
