ABSTRACT A powder, for example a mixture of titanium carbide and alumina powder, is densified into a fine grained sintered ceramic by applying a first constant physical pressure to the powder and heating it at a first predetermined temperature rate to onset of powder shrinkage, and then densifying the powder through at least two sequentially decreasing densification rates by variation of the applied pressure.
