ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Metal oxyhalides of the general formula ABO3-fXf having perovskite-type crystal structures in which A and B are each cations of at least one metal and a portion of the type B cations are catalytically active; X is fluoride or cloride; and f is about from 0.01 to 1.0; useful for the promotion of oxidation and reduction reactions, including those involved in the cleanup of exhaust gases of internal combustion engines and their use in oxidation and reduction reactions.
