2118942 9306253 PCTABS00021 Continuous melting of lightweight shredded metal, e.g. in the recycling of aluminium can scrap, uses apparatus as shown in the figure 1, the scrap portions being fed into the top of a melting chamber (12) to be acted on by an upward flow of gases at controlled velocity, preferably recirculated from the top to the bottom by a fan (18), and heated to a temperature in excess of the metal melting point; the portions being borne in the flow within the chamber until they melt into denser droplets or globules which drop from the chamber to collect in a holding furnace (26).
