A B S T R A C T This invention relates to a method of recovering gold values from an activated carbon support which includes placing the support with the gold values adsorbed thereon in a column having a first end and a second end, introducing deionised water as an eluant into the column near the second end, collecting the eluant containing the gold values near the first end of the column, while continuing the flow of eluant through the column, periodically removing a portion of the activated carbon support from which substantially all the gold values have been eluted from the column, and replacing the removed portion of the support with a further amount of the support having metal values captured thereon. This method is a batch-continuous method in that the activated carbon support is passed in the form of discrete slugs through the column and the eluant is continuously passed through the column countercurrent to the support. This method has several advantages over known elution methods, including the fact that less eluant is used and that the carbon residence time in the column is substantially reduced.
