ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus and method for coating a surface of a moving metal sheet with a thin film of lubricant having a uniform thickness. The apparatus includes a lubricant applicator roller having an absorbent and tear resistant surface for engaging the metal sheet, a backup roller for engaging the applicator roller, a header assembly including nozzles evenly spaced across the passline of the metal sheet for delivering lubricant into the nip formed between the applicator roller and backup roller, and means for controlling and providing intermittent flow of lubricant through the nozzles. The method includes vertically displacing the applicator roller until it contacts the moving metal sheet and cyclically flowing lubricant through the nozzles for periods of time such that the amount of lubricant delivered into the nip formed between the applicator roller and backup roller approximates the amount of lubricant transferred by the applicator roller to the surface of the metal sheet during each cycle,
