ABSTRACT A multi-strand metal cable having a metal sleeve secured thereto, comprising a rough surfaced metal friction layer bonded to a selected axial section of the surface of the cable, a layer of compliant material overlying the metal friction layer and the metal sleeve surrounding the layer of compliant material and compressing it against the cable, and the method of securing a metal sleeve to a stranded metal cable, comprising: applying a rough surfaced metal friction layer to the surface of a selected axial section of the cable: positioning a compliant underlay over the friction layer; positioning the sleeve over the compliant underlay, and reducing the diameter of the sleeve so that it grips the underlay and forces the underlay to grip the cable.
