ABSTRACT This invention relates to catalyst units. comprising a generally cylindrical substrate and a catalyst material directly or indirectly supported thereon, the substrate including two helically wound superimposed strips of metal which are such that a plurality of channels extending from one end face of the substrate to the other end face are formed when the two strips are helically wound characterised by one or more welds disposed on at least one end face of the substrate, the weld or welds serving to bridge and thereby secure a number of successive convolutions to each other.
