The invention provides a process for cleaning a metal surface including the steps of: (a) contacting the metal surface with an alkaline cleaning solution in order to remove contaminants such as dirt and grease; and (b) contacting said metal surface with an acidic, rare earth ion containing cleaning solution thereby to remove smut formed on said metal surface by step (a). The process may be used to prepare a metal surface for a subsequent coating process which includes the further step of: contacting the metal surface with an aqueous, acidic, rare earth ion containing coating solution including rare earth cations capable of having more than one valence state, resulting in an increase of the pH of the coating solution in the region of the metal surface to a value sufficient to precipitate one or more compounds of the rare earth element, thereby to cause the compound of the rare earth element to precipitate in a coating on the metal surface. The present invention also provides an acidic, rare earth ion containing aqueous cleaning solution for use in step (b) of the process of the invention, said solution including ions of one or more rare earth elements in an amount effective to remove smut from a metal surface previously contacted with an alkaline cleaning solution. The invention also extends to a metal surface, treated by the process of the invention.
L'invention concerne un procédé de nettoyage d'une surface métallique. Il consiste a) à mettre cette surface métallique en contact avec une solution de nettoyage alcaline chargée d'éliminer des contaminants tels que des souillures et de la graisse; et b) à mettre cette surface métallique en contact avec une solution de nettoyage contenant un ion acide de terres rares pour éliminer la saleté formée sur cette surface métallique lors de l'étape a). On peut utiliser ce procédé pour préparer une surface métallique à un processus de revêtement ultérieur qui comporte une étape supplémentaire consistant à mettre la surface métallique en contact avec une solution aqueuse de revêtement contenant un ion acide de terres rares et des cations de terres rares pouvant présenter plus d'un état de valence, ce qui accroît le pH de cette solution de revêtement, près de la surface métallique, jusqu'à une valeur suffisante pour précipiter un ou plusieurs composés des terres rares qui forment alors un revêtement sur la surface métallique. L'invention concerne aussi une solution de nettoyage aqueuse, contenant un ion acide de terres rares, utilisable à l'étape b) du processus inventé. Cette solution comporte des ions d'une ou plusieurs terres rares présents en quantité efficace pour éliminer la saleté d'une surface métallique ayant été auparavant mise en contact avec une solution de nettoyage alcaline. L'invention concerne aussi une surface métallique traitée par le procédé inventé.
