A metal wood golf club head and club are disclosed comprising a body which includes the face, sole, toe, heel and hosel of the club head; a thin, hard metal insert which is joined to an opening in the face; a plurality of grooved runners extending rear-to-front along the sole of the body, terminating at the leading edge of the body; and a plurality of weights mounted recessed in the surface of the runners. Preferably the face insert is maraging metal and the weights are tungsten copper.
