A plastic cutlery item (10, 20, 30), fabricated primarily from a plastic material, such as polystyrene, having a metallic coating (14, 24, 34) that imparts to the cutlery item the appearance of metal cutlery or silverware. The plastic cutlery or tableware items are molded using traditional injection molding techniques, and subjected to a vacuum metallizing process in an individualized non-contiguous manner, where a thin metallic layer is deposited on at least one of their surfaces. In the most preferred embodiment of the invention the plastic cutlery or items are molded from a light-transmitting grade of Polystyrene resin and are coated with a thin stainless steel layer through vacuum sputtering deposition on only one of the surfaces.

Un article de coutellerie en plastique (10, 20, 30) fabriqué principalement avec un matériau plastique, tel que le polystyrène, comporte un revêtement métallique (14, 24, 34) qui lui confère l'aspect de la coutellerie métallique ou des pièces d'argenterie. Ces articles de table ou de coutellerie en plastique sont moulés par des procédés classiques de moulage par injection, puis soumis à un procédé de métallisation sous vide de façon individualisée et isolée dans lequel une couche métallique est déposée sur au moins une de leurs surfaces. Dans le mode de réalisation idéal, les articles de table en plastique sont moulés dans une résine polystyrène à grade luminescent, puis recouverts, sur une seule surface, d'une fine couche d'acier inoxydable par dépôt par pulvérisation.
