ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A metallurgical smelting and refining unit in which scrap, sponge-iron, solidified and molten pig-iron may be processed in any desired mixing ratios, and coal, oil, gas or electricity may used as sources of energy. To this end, and with a view to reducing investment costs, the furnace-vessel is in the form of a circular hearth-furnace in which the ratio between the inside diameter and inside height is between 0,8 and 2,5 a bank of first nozzles being provided on each side of the taphole, the said nozzles opening out below the level of the molten metal. Moreover, two further nozzles open into the furnace-vessel above the level of the molten metal, the said nozzles being designed as burners. The load material may be preheated and charged under control by means of a scrap preheater, the bottom of which consists of grate parts permeable to gas and adapted to open outwardly from the middle.
