04- 21(476)A METALS COATED WITH PROTECTIVE COATINGS OF ANNEALED PERFLUORINATED CATION-EXCHANGE POLYMERS AND METHOD FOR MAKING SAME ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A passive metal is coated with a perfluorocarbon copolymer cation-exchange polymer and subsequently annealed. The annealed polymer coating acts as a barrier to anions which attack and break- down the passivity mechanism of such passive metals, thereby pro- tecting the passive metals against localized corrosion, such as crevice or pitting corrosion, caused by anionic attack.
