A metatarsal protector for footwear consists of a body molded from resilient plastics material, the material being sufficiently flexible to be molded flat and bent to a saddle shape when incorporated into the footwear. The range of hardness required for the material is between 35 and 60 Shore (Durometer A). The protector comprises a plurality of ridged projections protruding from one surface, forming a plurality of open-mouthed recesses, which may be circular, rectangular or triangular. The projections may be more closely spaced at and around the usual impact point. The body may be provided on its opposite surface with second projections, each registering with a respective recess at the first surface; these are the same shape and size, or slightly smaller, so that on deformation they enter their respective recesses, increasing the impact absorption. The resultant boots can meet the Mt75 impact classification.
