Carter 8500 METERING ROD FOR AN AIR VALVE CARBURETOR Daniel L. Ranson St. Louis, Missouri Abstract of the Disclosure An air valve for a carburetor has its lower end mounted for pivotal move- ment between open and closed positions relative to the air and fuel mixture conduit and carries a metering rod which extends generally in a horizontal direction. The metering rod has an end extending within a fuel discharge port in the mixture conduit wall and the port communicates with a main fuel passage. The air valve has a notch in its leading edge adjacent the mixture conduit wall through which the metering rod extends and downwardly moving air is chan- nelized or concentrated at the notch particularly at a curb idle position. The metering rod has an enlarged diameter portion at the notch forming an annular surface about the periphery of the rod which faces the discharge port and stops the flow of fuel along the rod from the fuel passage to permit the fuel to be drawn easily from the metering rod by the downwardly moving air. The annular surface about the metering rod is formed at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the rod and may comprise an integral enlarged diameter rod portion or a washer-like member on the metering rod.
