PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: L'invention concerne un procédé de synthèse catalytique du méthane à partir d'un mélange d'oxydes de carbone et d'hydrogène et en présence d'eau liquide, caractérisé en ce que le catalyseur comprend du ruthénium déposé sur un support constitué de charbon d'origine végétale dont la surface est comprise entre 200 et 1500 m2/g ou d'une alumine à laquelle ont été ajoutés de 2 à 50% en poids de silice lors de la mise en forme ou après la mise en forme de ladite alumine. Ce procédé s'avère particulièrement utile pour la production de méthane par réaction de l'hydrogène sur le monoxyde de carbone.
